If you’re looking for a hidden gem in Nashville, you have to try Velvet Taco! It’s one of my favorite restaurants in town, located in the lively Hillsboro Village neighborhood. The restaurant offers innovative twists on traditional tacos, by incorporating a unique southern charm.
A must-try is the chicken and waffles taco which is phenomenal. The blend of flavors is unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. This dish combines two southern specialties – chicken and waffles – into taco form. The taco shell is made of waffles, and the chicken is seasoned with a hint of sweetness and drizzled with honey, creating the perfect balance of sweet and savory. This taco flavor is hands down the best thing on the menu and definitely worth a try.
I also highly recommend the red curry coconut queso, which may sound like an unusual combination, but it’s surprisingly delicious. It has a little bit of a kick, but not too spicy. The unique blend of cheeses, red curry paste, and coconut create a creamy texture that’s hard to resist. While Velvet Taco also offers a standard queso blanco, the red curry coconut queso is superior. It’s worth ordering for anyone looking for something new.
Another great feature of this spot is the spacious outdoor seating area, which is a rarity in many Nashville restaurants. The area has air fans that provide a cool breeze during the summer months, making it a popular dinner spot. The patio and interior of the restaurant have cool light fixtures that give the place a vintage and funky feel.
Aside from the chicken and waffle tacos, I highly recommend trying out Jarrito’s Mexican sodas. Although they are available at other restaurants, Velvet Taco has an array of soda flavors. The refreshing flavors such as Lime, Grapefruit, Fruit Punch, and Guava all pair nicely with the savory tacos. My personal favorite is the Guava Jarrito. It has a vibrant, pink color, and its tantalizing aroma fills the air as soon as you open the bottle. It’s both sweet and tangy, making it the perfect thirst quencher on a hot summer day.
Overall, I give this place a 10/10. One of the best things about it is that they offer a new taco flavor every week, so there’s always something new to try.
