I think you guys knew the Gunna blog was coming; it was only a matter of time. Whenever I play music in the car, I think everyone can expect Gunna to play at least 3 or 4 times, possibly even more. Once you listen to his music, you will realize how addicting it is. I have been a loyal fan for about 5 years now. I really got into his music during my junior year of high school, and it was Drip or Drown 2 that made me a fan.
For me, what makes him stand out as an artist is his versatility. He explores many different genres of music, and he has recently been trying out slower styles. In his newest album, DS4EVER, he takes a stab at this genre in the songs “you&me”, “missing me”, and “so far ahead> empire.” We saw him explore this type of slower, melodic flow in “Close Friends”, but I enjoyed seeing him delve deeper into this genre on his own album.
As rap artists coming out of Atlanta, Gunna and Lil Baby are often compared to each other. I think Gunna brings more to the table in many ways. Lil baby is a great rapper, don’t get me wrong, but he rarely ever switches up his flow. In his new album “It’s Only Me”, he basically does the same thing for most of the songs. He’s definitely dropped better albums like Drip Harder and My Turn. Lil Baby definitely peaked when he dropped My Turn; that album is timeless. “Emotionally Scarred”, “Grace”, and “All In” are some of Lil Baby’s best pieces, and nothing has gotten close to them recently.
The award for Gunna’s best album would undoubtedly go to Wunna. I vividly remember when this album came out; it was in May of 2020. This was a great time for music, as people weren’t really going anywhere or doing anything. People really gave their undivided attention to new music that was dropping, and all these new albums defined the quarantine era quite well. The first song I listened to from Wunna was “Sun Came Out”, and it quickly became one of my favorite songs of all time. It has a slower, chill vibe that anyone can appreciate, and you get the full experience of listening to it at night, ironically. The rhythm and beat of the song are otherworldly; it is a dose of serotonin.
“Don’t Play Around” also has a similar vibe and would easily rank as one of my all-time favorite Gunna songs as well, alongside “south to west”, “I am”, and “Car Sick.” I like Gunna when he is rapping, but I prefer him on chiller songs. “Argentina” is a prime example of how he excels in this genre; it is one of his most underrated songs. You know it is a phenomenal song because it can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Lyrically, Gunna isn’t as strong as other artists in his genre, but I think the beats and the production of his songs are outstanding. The beat of a song is what compels me to listen to it, and for some people, it’s the lyrics. It solely depends on your preferences.
Not only is Gunna great on his own, but he also complements other artists nicely. On most of the songs that Gunna is on, he crushes his features. I have yet to hear a feature he has ruined. I think the artist that truly complements Gunna’s style best is Young Thug. You can really see this in collabs like “Far”, “Dollaz On My Head”, and “Surf.” They each bring something unique to the table. Thug brings his eccentric voice and creativity, while Gunna brings an icy calm feel to any song. It makes sense that their styles seamlessly melt together because Thug taught Gunna everything he knows.
Not only has Gunna undeniably made a name for himself in the music industry, but he is also known as a fashion influencer. He is known to mix patterns and textures and even wears funky hats. Rihanna even dressed up as him for Halloween, and that is proof enough of Gunna’s influence in the fashion scene. He has been talking about creating his own line and exploring his creativity in the world of fashion.
